Important state-by-state, county-by-county directory of free Black heads of families in 1830 with a 53-page introduction by Carter G. Woodson—“The Father of Black History.” The introduction includes sections devoted to “Preventing the Increase of the Free Negroes,” “The Free Negro before the Law,” and “Economic Achievement.” With complete index of names.
Woodson’s monograph was published by The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) which he founded in 1915. From ASNLH sprang forth the Journal of Negro History and in 1926 the beginning of Negro History Week—now Black History Month, celebrating black lives and achievement.
