Important, early American autobiographical slave narrative by Moses Roper, a native of North Carolina who was enslaved in South Carolina and Florida. Facsimile reprint of the second, London edition of 1838 with a preface by British Baptist minister and abolitionist, Thomas Price (1802–1868), who helped organize meetings for Roper during the latter’s stay in Great Britain. Roper’s Narrative is noted for explicitly documenting and illustrating slave torture methods.
