Bunche was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize

Separate 1952 publication of Nobel Peace Laureate, American diplomat, and civil rights activist Ralph J. Bunche’s lecture “Peace and the United Nations,” signed by Bunche and accompanied by a brief typed letter signed transmitting the pamphlet as a gift. The letter is on UN letterhead and is dated the same year Bunche was appointed United Nations undersecretary-general for special political affairs.

Ralph J. Bunche (1904–1971) played key roles in organizing the United Nations after the Second World War, helped draft its charter, and served in various positions in the U.S. delegation to the UN and in the United Nations’ own administration. Bunche received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950—the first African American so honored—for his work trying resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict on Palestine.

“With the outbreak of the Suez crisis in 1956, he was again called upon to use his diplomatic skills in a Middle Eastern conflict, and he organized the UN Emergency Force that was responsible for peacekeeping activities in the region. ... He participated in the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery with Martin Luther King, Jr. ... By using his diplomatic skills in the service of the United Nations, he promoted the cause of peace in a world that sorely needed men of dedication and ability in this area.” (ANB)
