Not to Be Taken From Car, Library and Magazines…Soo-Spokane Service. [cover title of railroad library car catalog]

Unrecorded catalog listing numerous books and magazines available on the library cars of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad, commonly called the “Soo Line.”

The catalog, issued August 1, 1907, contains separate alphabetical author and title lists of books for the railroad’s “Soo-Spokane Service” from Michigan to Washington State. Six library cars are named—“Cranbrook,” “Curzon,” “Fernie,” “Nelson,” “Spokane,” and “Yahk,” the catalog’s tabular form indicating which specific titles were available on each library car.

A list a magazines available in each of the library cars includes such popular American periodicals as Harper’s Monthly, Judge, Ladies Home Journal, “Puck,” and “Forest and Prairie Homemaker.” In a nod to the Canadian Pacific Railway, which owned the “Soo Line,” Canadian Life and Resources and Canadian Magazine were also available to readers.

Ads within offer Soo Line Postal Cards, promote fruit farms in Nelson, British Columbia, and tout “Splendid Business Propositions” from the Spokane [Washington] Chamber of Commerce. Also seen are ads for town developments in Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake Country, travel books from W.R. Callaway, General Passenger Agent, and an ad for the “Soo Line.”
