Saint Peter Relates an Incident. Selected Poems.

Volume of poems by civil-rights leader, Harlem Renaissance poet, and novelist, James Weldon Johnson (1871–1938). In addition to the title poem, the book includes such works as “O Black and Unknown Bards,” “Ma Lady’s Lips am like de Honey,” and the iconic “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” “In early 1900 [Johnson] and his brother Rosamond, an accomplished musician, collaborated on ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ an anthem commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. African-American groups around the country found the song inspirational, and within fifteen years it had acquired a subtitle: ‘The Negro National Anthem.’” (ANB)
