The Story of the Negro Retold. [Second Edition]

An Important Textbook for Pre-War African American Students

African American history for school students authored by Carter G. Woodson, “The Father of Black History”, black historian, and prolific author. The Story of the Negro Retold went through many editions.

Woodson begins with the African Diaspora and proceeds to write of slavery in America, the American Revolution and the Negro, the fuller development of slavery in America, Abolitionism, Reconstruction, the “Negro Problem”, the Negro in the first World War, as an international factor, etc.

This edition further covers up to and including the middle years of America’s Great Depression; the African American’s health, pursuits, business activities, church life, education, and social welfare. The final portion of the text proper discusses the “Higher Aim” of the Negro; to never forget the difficult past nor the achievements accomplished as a people.
