I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’. The Theatre Guild presents Porgy and Bess.
Original Art Deco sheet music for the song “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin’” from the 1935 African-American-themed opera Porgy and Bess. The opera’s music was composed by George Gershwin (1898–1937) with lyrics by DuBose Hayward (1885–1940) and Ira Gershwin (1896–1983).
The song, one of the opera’s most famous, is sung by the title character Porgy in the opera’s second act. An advertisement on the sheet music’s back cover for Gershwin Publishing Corporation includes the opening bars of some of the opera’s other well-known songs including “Summertime,” “Bess You Is My Woman,” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So.”
The cover of the sheet music is a stylized Art Deco design featuring Porgy and Bess in the foreground and the slave cabin-like plantation buildings of the opera’s Catfish Row and the skyline of New York City, suggestive of the opera’s plot.
