Collected volume of poetry by writer Paul Laurence Dunbar published the year after his marriage to Alice Ruth Moore, to whom the book is dedicated. Many of the poems—which are written in both standard English and in black “dialect”—were first published in magazines such as The Ladies Home Journal, The Outlook, Century, and The Cosmopolitan. Includes the poems “At Candle-Lightin’ Time” and “Sympathy,” the final lines of the latter—“But a plea, that upward to Heaven he flings — / I know why the caged bird sings!”—inspired the title of Maya Angelou’s first book, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
