The Cavalier. [Inscribed Copy]

Inscribed and signed by the author, New Orleans-native George Washington Cable (1844–1925), a novel of the American Civil War set in the Confederacy. In full: “As our President said in San Juan Hill, ‘Will you kindly let my horsemen pass?’ Yours truly G.W. Cable. Christmas, 1901.”

Mirroring in part Cable’s own Civil War experience in the Fourth Mississippi Cavalry, the novel concerns a Confederate cavalryman or “cavalier” from New Orleans who serves in a Mississippi regiment. With eight full-page illustrations by Howard Chandler Christy.
