Preface: “I have collected four striking types of house-servants to perpetuate in print [...] what was the real ante bellum family slave.” Written mostly in dialect. Inscribed by the author to an anonymous recipient, dated in the year of the book’s publication: “Sis memor mei! Yours cordially Mary M. Pleasants / Hollins May 31st 1910.”
