Anthology of short, sermon-like reflections by a noted American clergyman, reformer, and abolitionist

Quite scarce, preceding the first American edition. Anthology of short, sermon-like reflections by noted American clergyman, orator, reformer, and abolitionist, Henry Ward Beecher (1813–1887). “These pages are a protest against that heathenism in the Christian Church, which attempts to confine a man to certain faculties in the exposition of God’s royal truths, and the application of them to men…” (p[iii])

Beecher’s volume—here first published in Edinburgh and London and in a traditionally religious, yapped cloth binding—dates from a time when the noted abolitionist was gaining popularity in Great Britain. “As editor of The Independent between 1861 and 1864, [Beecher] campaigned for the party, supported the war effort, urged Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, and undertook a popular speaking tour of England that helped keep that country from joining the side of the Confederates.” (ANB)

Pennsylvania Congressman, lawyer, writer, and poet, James Bowen Everhart’s (1821–1888) copy; with his bookplate.
