Women’s work for Jesus. [First Edition]

A remarkable 19th century reformer

Scarce, self-published in Philadelphia first edition of these exhortations by this female author (and publisher and creator of The Christian Woman) to let women work in a wide variety of spheres: e.g., to aid the sick and the poor and the fallen soldier, to rid society of its evils, such as alcohol; to perform missionary duties, at home and abroad.

Annie Turner Wittenmyer (1827–1900) “Civil War relief worker, leader in church and charitable work, and first president of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union [...] [She] became a pioneer in urging the members of her sex to participate in relief and reform work on a nationwide scale. Highly articulate and literate, she combined strong qualities of leadership with a preference for a persuasive approach to gain concessions from male leaders. Her piety, her sentimentality, and her coolness toward woman suffrage appealed to moderates of both sexes.” (NAW)

The present work went through at least six editions.
