Scarce, self-published in Philadelphia first edition of these exhortations by this female author (and publisher and creator of The Christian Woman) to let women work in a wide variety of spheres: e.g., to aid the sick and the poor and the fallen soldier, to rid society of its evils, such as alcohol; to perform missionary duties, at home and abroad.

Annie Turner Wittenmyer (1827–1900) “Civil War relief worker, leader in church and charitable work, and first president of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union [...] [She] became a pioneer in urging the members of her sex to participate in relief and reform work on a nationwide scale. Highly articulate and literate, she combined strong qualities of leadership with a preference for a persuasive approach to gain concessions from male leaders.
