Juniata Memories, Legends Collected in Central Pennsylvania. [Presentation Copy]

Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author and dated 1916. This book compiles the folklore and tales of the southern Juniata River valley in Central Pennsylvania. The author, a member of the American Folklore Society, gathered the material in 1911–1913 and 1914 and 1915 during several driving trips. As noted in the author’s preface, “[t]he legends were secured from old people, hermits, farmers, lumbermen, teamsters, hostlers, hUnters, trappers, old soldiers, and their ladies. ... They treat of Indian days principally, with a god sprinkling of the supernatural, of hunting, lumbering, and pioneering.”
