The Real Abraham Lincoln. A Complete One Volume History of His Life and Times. [With Author’s Autograph Letter Signed]

“I have endeavored to divest myself of Sandburgian folklore and anecdotes”

Biogarphy of Abraham Lincoln by former Columbia history professor Reinhard H. Luthin whose research “...drew upon the 194 Volume Robert Todd Lincoln Collection, Lincoln’s privately written letters, the latest work on the family life and legal career to complete this definitive one-volume life of Lincoln…” Luthin’s book The First Lincoln Campaign won the best Lincoln book award for 1944 from the Lincoln National Life Foundation.

Laid into this copy is a four-page Autograph Letter Signed by Luthin to Duke University historian Robert Durden. The chatty letter discusses Duke faculty members, a memorial to the late Duke history Professor William K. Boyd, and includes Luthin’s comments on The Real Abraham Lincoln, specifically mentioning poet and Lincoln biographer, Carl Sandburg:

The Lincoln book was a terribly time-consuming job to do, and I only hope that the historical profession will accept it as one of the standard works on Lincoln. I have endeavored to divest myself of Sandburgian folklore and anecdotes in it, to the best of my ability. (pp2–3)

Scattered pencil annotations within the book, possibly by Robert Durden, suggest they were made in aid of writing a review of the book.
