Wright’s was the third Black American to receive a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. His 1911 doctoral thesis is a thorough work of the history of African Americans in Pennsylvania from the Colonial Period until the early 20th century. Wright offers a wide arc of chapters describing the African-American experience in Pennsylvania: occupations, entrepreneurial endeavors, ownership of property, education, crime, poverty, interracial experience; church and secret societies.
