Wright’s scarce 1911 doctoral thesis. The third Black American to receive a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. The present work is a thorough work of the history of African Americans in Pennsylvania from the Colonial Period until the early 20th century. Wright offers a wide arc of chapters describing the African American experience in Pennsylvania: occupations, entrepreneurial endeavors, ownership of property, education, crime, poverty, interracial experience; church and secret societies.
