R. Bolland & Sons Wedding Cakes [Trade Catalogs].
“Historic Bride Cake Makers to the Royal Family”
C. 1890s trade catalog of wedding cakes issued by Chester, England restaurateurs, R. Bolland & Sons, “Historic Bride Cake Makers to the Royal Family.” Full-page half tone illustrations depict elaborate, towering late Victorian wedding cakes on fancy plateaux, some of the cakes weighing up to 100 pounds. Accompanying it is a second trade catalog of catering services available from the company.
As a marketing technique, R. Bolland & Sons appealed to their having supplied wedding cakes to the British royal family whose coats of arms and emblems are illustrated within. The wedding cake of the Prince and Princess of Wales and of Princess Louise are shown.
The company’s tiered wedding cakes or “bride cakes” came in a variety sizes, heights, and decorated styles. Prices range from £1 1s. to £24. Various icing and sugar piping techniques are shown as are cakes decorated with natural flowers, wreaths, and festoons.
The catalog also offered what R. Bolland & Sons called “Presentation Wedges” of bride cake suitable for mailing as gifts, likely for those who could not attend the nuptials. The catalog advertised the company’s restaurant and catering services as well as its wide selection of other fancy cakes and desserts. These included christening cakes, birthday cakes (initials, names, and inscribed banners available for an extra charge), “Lawn Tennis Cakes,” tea cakes, jellies, iced entremêts, ice creams, water ices, etc.
Laid into the wedding cake catalog are two magazine offprints, one from the Strand Magazine (July 1895) and the other from Lady’s Pictorial (December 15, 1894). The offprinted articles highlight recent wedding cake creations for royal and other high society weddings, including one for the family of Duke of Westminster whose family owned much of the land in and around the city of Chester. Accompanying all of this is a second trade catalog of catering services available from R. Bolland & Sons including soups, hot and cold entrées, salads and meats, fruits, chocolates, desserts, wines, and picnic hampers for tennis, garden, and racing parties.
A veritable slice of late Victorian wedding cake and other catering options.
