21 law pamphlets with Clearfield, Pennsylvania imprints

Sammelband of rare and ephemeral law pamphlets kept by attorney Henry Bucher Swoope (1831–1874) of Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.

These 21 pamphlets—virtually all of which bear Clearfield [Borough], Pennsylvania imprints —comprise pleas, ejectments, paper books, arguments, etc. involving Swoope and span the years 1852, when he was first admitted to the bar, to 1864. Notable here is Swoope’s appeal of the murder conviction of Irish immigrant John Cathcart (see 9 and 10 below). The court refused a re-trial.

“H. Bucher Swoope was one of the leading lawyers of Pennsylvania and as an advocate had few equals. He was also prominent in politics, having been chairman of the American party when that organization captured the state government and elected Pollock Governor. ... [He was] a strong supporter of President Lincoln and the war to preserve the Union, organizing and commanding a company of soldiers to assist in repelling the rebel invasion of Pennsylvania… Mr. Swoope was the founder and first editor of the Clearfield ‘Raftsman’s Journal,’ which under his able editorship assumed an important place in the newspaper field. He was also the founder and editor in chief of the ‘Pittsburgh Evening Telegraph,’ (now the ‘Chronicle Telegraph’). As a prosecuting officer he became celebrated during his incumbency [after 1870] of the office of U.S. Attorney [Western District of Pennsylvania] and his name was a terror to evil doers, as the acquittal of a defendant in a trial in which Mr. Swoope represented the Government was an almost unheard of event.”¹
