Among the Alaskans.

With a Chronology of Events in Alaska Missions

Excellent copy of this educational and missionary history of Presbyterianism in Alaska with notes on the Native Americans there by prolific Victorian woman author, Julia McNair Wright (1840–1903). Born in Oswego, New York, Wright was educated privately and in seminaries. Of Wright, commentators in 1893 wrote the following: “She began her literary career at sixteen by the publication of short stories. Her published works include…‘Priest and Nun’ (1869)...‘Bricks from Babel,’ a manual of ethnography (1876); ‘The Complete Home’ (1879)...and ‘The Nature Readers,’ four volumes (1887-91). Her works have been very popular. Most of her stories have been republished in Europe, in various languages, and several of them have appeared in Arabia.”¹

Numerous illustrations in Wright’s Among the Alaskans depict views and scenes in Alaska as well as anthropological images showing totem-poles, tattooing, and native burial practices. In addition to a color frontispiece “General Map of Alaska and the neighboring Coasts” there a map detail showing settlements in Southeastern Alaska. With an Appendix containing a “Chronology of Events in Alaska Missions,” 1877–1883 and notes on the “Indian Races” and “On the Formation of Home-Mission Bands.”
