[1940 Lionel Train Catalog].
“Dad, we want a train that will really go places. That’s why we’re getting a Lionel, son!”
Colorful trade catalog for Lionel trains issued by The Lionel Corporation, makers of the iconic American children’s toy railroad system.
This pre-WWII catalog touts the toy trains’ electrified action, scale model realism and dependable performance: “Look to the locomotive for the key to scale model realism in a miniature railroad. If the engine is accurate and correct you can gamble the whole system is as realistic.” (p7) Numerous close-up photos depict true-to-life details.
Whole railroad systems or toy train sets show locomotives, coal tenders, freight and passengers cars, rolling stock, specialty cars and cabooses. Sets were available in several gauges: “O,” “O-27,” “OO,” and “O-72.” Traditional locomotives are shown as are modern, streamlined engines. Specifications, ordering numbers, and prices are provided for all outfits.
Available train accessories include “Lionel Trainmaster” electrical transformers; current inverters and train controls; whistle equipment; train track and track equipment; railroad control signal lights; crossing gates; automatic, mechanical gatemen and watchmen; coal elevators; log loaders; bridges; yard equipment; tunnels; misc. out buildings; and a “Triple-Action Magnetic Crane.”
