College Shopper and Smacker. Spring–1926.
Unrecorded women’s collegiate hybrid cookbook and shopping directory
Curious, rare, unrecorded. A cook book/shopping directory hybrid aimed at college women in the Boston–New York corridor.
The cooking recipes, mostly for candies and desserts (still a favored college diet) appear in tandem with ads for women’s clothing, luncheon and tea rooms, shoes, art and books, tailors and dressmakers, hats, gifts, etc. Hence the title references to “shopper” and “smacker.”
The directory portion or index includes sections for New York and Boston as well as Springfield and Northampton in Massachusetts, thus appealing to women students at nearby women’s colleges: Barnard, Vassar, Radcliffe, Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, and Smith—almost all of the “Seven Sisters.” Ads seen here include The Vassar Shop and an ad for a taxi service that includes this dialogue: “Soph: I hear that Smith girls don’t have to walk home any more. Frosh: Why not? Soph: They call [City Taxi Company] instead. Guaranteed safe and speedy service.”
An unusual women’s collegiate hybrid cookbook and shopping directory aimed at the Ivy League set.
