Homeopathy, botanic medicine, and unrecorded. Chicago medical imprint promoting an herbal extract derived from Oenathera Biennis or evening primrose; with case studies of the drug as administered by Chicago physician, T. Riker Nute, M.D.

Nute touts the herbal extract’s use to heal diseases of the mucous surface and for treating constipation, dyspepsia, eczema, diarrhea, various eye conditions, gonorrhea, burns, wounds, ulcers, etc. “When administered internally its exhilerating [sic] effect on the nervous system is analogous to that of an effervescing draught of champagne, and when applied locally or topically it is a Vulnerary [wound healer] of surpassing certainty and promptness.” (p7) Homeopathists still use the herb today to treat diarrhea and eczema.

Almost half the text (14 pages) is devoted to five of Dr. Nute’s case studies wherein he used Oenathera Biennis to treat patients suffering from constipation, ship fever, displacement of the uterus, acute peritonitis, and cholera morbus (gastroenteritis).

A four-page section in the back of the pamphlet advertises artificial limbs and eyes, microscopes etc., and various pharmaceutical preparations. Jansen, McClurg & Co., “Dealers in Medical Books,” took a full page ad on the back cover.
