Advertising card for a public reading of African American poetry, given by Truda T. Weil at the Woman’s Club of Reading, Pennsylvania. The program consisted of readings from the works of Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, and James Weldon Johnson.¹

Weil worked for various teachers’ unions in New York and was a teacher of art and English literature at the Brooklyn Ethical Culture School. The verso of the card promotes a lecture, “Russia, Through the Artist’s Eye,” by art critic and Russian art collector Dr. Christian Brinton, an early advocate for African American artist Horace Pippin.
