Defense of the treatment of slaves in the American South by a prominent Nashville, Tennessee Presbyterian minister and former Confederate chaplain. Rev. Dr. McNeilly here gives “...some account of what was done by the Southern people for the spiritual welfare and religious instruction of the negroes” (p27), whom he considered to be an inferior race.

The booklet is inscribed by the author to Baltimore editor and historian of the South, Matthew Page Andrews (1879-1947). Page is noted as the author of The Women in the South in War Times (1920) and the historical drama, The Birth of America (1920).

A Christian defense of slavery and reflections on the current “negro problem in the South.”
