Anti-slavery speech delivered in the Pennsylvania Senate against a white supremacist senator


Entire front-page Civil-War-era anti-slavery speech arguing for the abolition of slavery in Washington, D.C. by Free Soil Republican State Senator George Landon. Landon’s speech printed here in The Bradford Argus (a Republican newspaper) encompasses over 10 full columns. Landon delivered his speech in the Pennsylvania Senate, against a white supremacist senator. His speech was in reply to State Senator Hiester Clymer who Landon accused of stalling abolition in the District by insisting that its citizens, and those of Maryland, give their assent. Additionally, the newspaper includes much war news including the Battle of Pittsburg, the taking of Fort Pulaski.
