Live Stock, a Complete Compendium for the American Farmer and Stock Owner… [Salesman’s Sample Book].
Color illustrated canvassing book with for a livestock and veterinary text; with fold-out
Salesman’s sample book, dummy, or canvassing book heavily illustrated with 33 color and numerous other halftones for a livestock and veterinary text aimed at farmers: Live Stock, a Complete Compendium for the American Farmer and Stock Owner including Horses, Cattle, Swine, Sheep and Poultry being also a Complete Stock Doctor embracing the Effective Methods of Object Teaching with Written Instruction.
The title says it all; the salesman’s sample book attempts to do the same, but on a more visceral level. It’s purpose is to sell the book and a book’s illustrations always grab attention. While the book does provide representative texts from the yet-to-be-published book, its genius was to show numerous, full-page halftone illustrations including 33 color halftones presented in yellow and black. A large number of additional illustrations show both healthy and diseased animals.
The salesman’s dummy emulates three different versions the published book: “Library Style” leather bound, a less expensive alternative, “Half Russia” (here a kind of faux leather), and the least expensive, “Extra English Cloth,” the latter seen here in its entirety in dark green. Samples of the spines or backstrips for the former two are mounted on the endpapers.
The complete table of contents and selected pages of text give a sense of the projected book’s scope and contents. There is also a list of the illustrations which were projected to appear in the completed book. Blank subscription leaves to record the salesman’s orders conclude the volume.
Other elements of the book include a facsimile of co-author, A.H. Baker’s veterinary degree from Montreal Veterinary College (affiliated with McGill University) and a very large fold-out chart, (21 x 34 inches), “Teeth of the Horse,” by Dr. Louis S. Brandt, V.S.
Interesting early 20th-century salesman’s sample book for a popular, farmer’s and veterinary reference work presenting representations of three styles of trade bookbindings.
