The Macedonian Call. Haste to the Rescue! [Liberia, Africa Colonization Schemes]

“Africa is stretching forth her hands unto God…”

1870 broadside issued by the Ohio Colonization Society promoting colonization of African-Americans in Liberia. The broadside’s language entreats for funds by comparing the American Republic with those in Africa seeking to strengthen their own republic.

Opening lines, thus: “The most remarkable revival of religion that has ever been known in Africa, has spread throughout the Republic of Liberia, in Western Africa, extending from Americo [sic] to native Africans who are now conducting meetings on their own account…”

The society was formed in 1827 to encourage Black Ohioans to emigrate to Africa; they were still active after the American Civil War. Here the Ohio Colonization Society seeks to raise funds to encourage emigration for the purpose of evangelizing the continent:

Africa is stretching forth her hands unto God. Will not Christians in America strengthen the hands of the faithful who are now on the ground, building up a Republic like their own, which is to, as it must, furnish the missionary-forces for the salvation of the millions on that vast continent? Special prayer is requested from the pulpit, and at the family and the private altar, on the fourth Sabbath in July, in behalf of the Freedmen and others, who have gone to Liberia… And as you pray, GIVE…for the support of teachers, the education of African youth, or for the aid of the hundreds of Freedmen, and others, who have solicited the Parent Society to grant them free passage next November, that they may do the work they feel called of God to perform for their fatherland. ... Collections and donations can be sent to us by post office-money-orders, or otherwise, directly through the mail…

Signed in print by B.F. Romaine, Corresponding and Financial Secretary of the Ohio Colonization Society. Rev. Benjamin Franklin Romaine (1820–1874) was born in Poughkeepsie, New York and graduated from Rutgers College in 1842. After graduation he moved to Albany, New York and, until 1857, when he became a minister, edited the American Spectator.
