Copper Weather Vanes Gilded with Gold Leaf.

Trade catalog printed with metallic ink to advertise gilded weathervanes

Unrecorded and rare circa 1927 trade catalog for gilded copper weathervanes. Full-page illustrations are printed with bronze ink which simulate gilded design elements.

The play of the light upon the illustrations with their metallic ink highlights makes them pop off the page and set them apart from the company’s plainer offerings, a few of which are shown. Measurements, sometimes copper gauges and other design comments, and prices are listed for each.

Designs include traditional devices such as arrows, eagles, horses, roosters, running deer, and quill pens. The catalog’s lead illustrations, however, are reserved for an unusual assortment of three gilded copper automobiles, emblematic of the prosperous times of the late 1920s.

While practical, weathervanes add a bit of whimsy to building architecture. The catalog also features a a rather complex, Dutch-style windmill weathervane, four silhouette weather vanes (most of which were available with gold leaf), and two sundials.

While not quite the gilded windows of England’s palatial Chatsworth House, these copper gilded weathervanes do add the Midas touch to one’s home architecture.
