“When the Roll is Called in Nashville” and “Tennessee for Christ”

Song sheet issued by the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor for their July 1898 meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. An illustration shows the group’s banner with their “CE” logotype.

The song sheet features two hymns, one of which was written by L.L. Rice of Nashville for the occasion of the Endeavorers’ meeting there—“When the Roll is Called in Nashville, I’ll be There.”

This Tennessee-centric hymn was to be sung to the popular tune of “When the Roll is Called up Yonder” (1893) by James Milton Black:

When the Army of Endeavors shall gather far and wide,
And in ninety-eight bivouac in Dixie fair,
When shall peal forth hymns of loyalty from hearts so true and tried,
And the role is called in Nashville I’ll be there.
Chorus
When the roll is called in Nashville,
When the roll is called in Nashville,
When the roll is called in Nashville,
When the roll is called in Nashville I’ll be there.

On the verso are the words and music for the hymn “Tennessee for Christ” by composer Flora H. Cassel and lyricist or arranger Dr. E.T. Cassel. The hymn was excerpted from the book Triumphant Songs, compiled by composer/publisher E.O. Excell the modern arranger of the popular hymn “Amazing Grace.”

The nondenominational Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavor was an evangelical society founded in Maine in 1881 by Dr. Francis E. Clark, Pastor of the Williston Congregational Church in Portland.
