Practical information on food & fuel conservation; salvage of war materiels; and air raid protection

A remarkable Second World War war-effort poster with extraordinary design and excellent modernistic infographic delivery. The whole design matrix is almost that of a present-day web page.

At the very top is a header image with an aproned woman, bowl and spoon in hand, standing in front of her red house. On either side is her support team: American women in military uniform. They stand next to ambulance, tank, Jeep, and are flanked by airplanes.

These women represent WACs (Women’s Army Corps), WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots), and WAVEs (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service [Naval Reserve]).

This is the Homemaker’s War Guide and the civilian American woman is advised to “Plan,” “Conserve,” “Salvage” and be prepared with all aspects of “Air Raid Protection.” Beneath each of these separate sections is practical information on food and fuel conservation, the salvage of war materiels, and advice on volunteering:

Many women are now working in war plants. Take their places by helping all you can in day nurseries[,] diet kitchens [and] clinics[.]

Blank spaces are provided here: “Enroll at your Civilian Defense Volunteer Office. Address_____Tel._____.”

Helpful advice is explained via simple graphics, for example: “Plan wisely, shop carefully;” “When you shop, ask for Victory Food Specials [victory logotype of U.S. Department of Agriculture] Look for this sign.;” “use less hot water;” “Salvage Fats All types are needed…fats make explosives;” “How to get rid of Junk” (for scrap drives); and “Prepare, Safety in air raids depends on what you do beforehand.”

An extraordinary WWII poster aimed at civilian women, on the home front, issued during the first year of the United States’ entry into the war.
