[Cookery] Tid Bit Receipts for Lunches, Breakfast and Teas.

An excellent survival of a Boston foodstuffs company promoting their products

A miniature cookbook that fits neatly into the palm of one’s hand and promotes the beloved sandwich. The front wrap, which serves as the title-leaf, has clever stylized lettering over an idyllic scene of a small boat moored in a pound. The rear wrap shows an assortment of wildflowers over which are placed the many medals this Boston company was awarded at the Centennial and various expositions.

Inside the front cover, potential customers are told of sandwiches to be created by using Chowdrey’s cans of deviled ham, tongue, chicken or turkey. Recipes range from Ham Sandwiches à la Parisienne to Potato and Ham Balls to variants on ham and eggs.

Nineteenth-century American references to sandwiches within recipe books would seem to be decidedly scarce. A lovely example.
