WWI-era cookbook issued in March 1918 by the State Council of Defense of Illinois. “This book of recipes was compiled for the Patriotic Food Show of the State Council of Defense, which took place at the Coliseum, Chicago, January 5–13, 1918. All the recipes it contains were demonstrated at the Show; all have the approval of the United States Department of Agriculture and the United States Food Administration.” (p) War-time recipes include “Meatless Meat,” “Patriotic Cookies,” “Sugarless Quick Beads,” and “War-Time Cakes and Frostings.” Other sections of the cookbook concern “Suggestions for Conservation” and “War Service in the Home.”
