Document signed and recorded by Irish-American Revolutionary War patriot Mathew Irwin

Philadelphia land indenture signed by Anthony Morris (II) (1682–1763) of Philadelphia, here acting as “one of his Majesty’s Justices.” Proprietor of the Morris Brewery, Morris served as Mayor of Philadelphia in 1738 and was an associate justice of the city court.

The indenture is a “Release of a Lot of Ground in Sassafras Street” in Philadelphia made between Jonathan and Ann Biles and Thomas Coates. The document is signed and sealed by Jonathan and Ann Biles and was additionally signed by two witnesses.

Docketing on the verso includes the document’s recording in the office of Philadelphia’s recorder of deeds on April 19, 1786. This notation is signed and sealed by Mathew Irwin, Irish-American merchant and soldier. During the American Revolution, Irwin served as captain and quartermaster in the Pennsylvania line. He personally donated funds to support the troops at Valley Forge in December 1777 and in 1785 became recorder of Philadelphia.
