Will T. Johnson of Baltimore served 5 years in the “Gray Invincibles”


Military discharge document for Private Will T. Johnson of Philadelphia’s “Gray Invincibles,” an African American infantry militia unit of the Pennsylvania National Guard.

Baltimore-native Johnson enlisted on 1893 and was discharged on 1898. The present partly-printed document describes him as having “...Molata [mulatto] complexion, Black eyes, Black hair, and by occupation when enrolled a Printer.”

The Gray Invincibles were the last colored unit in the Pennsylvania militia.¹
