1844 Autograph Letter Signed from Luther Boardman, Successful Connecticut Silversmith Founder.

A Connecticut empire made of Britannia silverware

Luther Boardman founded the Boardman silver company in 1840. This letter, dated, 1844, is two years after Boardman had invented and patented his improved mold for Britannia silverware which made him a fortune in selling spoons.

Boardman writes, in part: “Above you have My Receipt [removed by recipients] in full for Bill of Spoons…” The rest of the letter is concerned with correcting and filling spoon orders for Boardman’s customer.

“The Boardman silversmith empire reached its peak in 1862 and lasted until 1880 when the general use of tinned iron spoons had, to a large extent, driven the Boardman britannia spoons out of business…” [See History - The Boardman Collection accessed online.]

An early manuscript artifact from the beginning years of this highly-successful Connecticut industry.
