1792 Autograph Document Signed of Moses Levy, prominent Philadelphia Jew, involving Robert Morris, financier of the American Revolution.

One of Philadelphia’s earliest Jewish lawyers

Legal document in the hand of, and autographed by, Moses Levy (1757-1826) one of the earliest Philadelphia Jewish lawyers before 1800; involving Robert Morris, Declaration of Independence signer, signer of he U.S. Constitution and the Articles of Confederation, “Financier of the American Revolution.”

Here, Levy records upon a Philadelphia court document that Philadelphia Samuel Wallis has won a suit vs. George Monroe involving Robert Morris. Levy received “...the accepted order of Robert Morris in thy [Wallis’] favour for… [just over £339] ...which when paid is to be carried to his [to Wallis’] credit by me.” Wallis and Morris were both land speculators.

While in debtor’s prison, Morris wrote bitterly of cunning Samuel Morris. Later he would write: “Samuel Wallis Dead of the Fever so that his Land Fever is Cured. You and I shall never meet him, even after Death. Of course we can never have any other satisfaction for the injuries he has done, or meditated to do us, than what Fate has administered.” — Robert Morris to John Nicholson, Oct. 17, 1798.
