Gratiot succeeded Macomb in the office of Chief Engineer in 1828
Two letters. U.S. Army Chief Engineer Col. Charles Gratiot here writes to Major General Alexander Macomb, Commanding General of the Unite States Army concerning the officer in charge of the construction of a road and expressing his wish “...that the plan and the necessary funds may be transmited [sic] to him.” In the second letter, Gratiot writes to Macomb regarding the making of six swords.
Col. Gratiot succeeded Macomb in the office of Chief Engineer in 1828. As a young man, Gratiot was personally appointed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point by President Thomas Jefferson. After graduation in 1806, Gratiot assisted Macomb in constructing the harbor fortifications in Charleston, South Carolina. During the War of 1812, Gratiot served as an engineer under General William Henry Harrison. Gratiot served as U.S. Army Chief Engineer from 1828 to 1838.
