Transmitting proof engraving (not present) of Scottish artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton’s painting Mors Janua Vitae (1866) and thanking the recipient, Jabez Hogg Esq., for his past assistance.

William Henry Simmons (1811–1882) was a noted English engraver who trained in copperplate and steel engraving before turning to the technique of mixed mezzotint.

Among his many commissions, he executed engravings after the paintings The Last of the Clan by Thomas Faed, Christ Weeping over Jerusalem by Sir Charles Eastlake, and The Sanctuary by Sir Edwin Landseer. Simmons’ most celebrated work is his engraving after Pre-Raphaelite William Holman Hunt’s The Light of the World (1858).
