With substantial inventory records

Substantial manuscript stock and cash ledger book for the firm of Stowe, Allen & Hutchins (sometimes Hutchens), cloth merchants and clothiers in Philadelphia. The first 84-page section of the manuscript or “Stock Book” appears to date from 1854. Following this is a 104-page section titled Inventory of Merchandise in Dry Goods Department.

The inventory of Stowe, Allen & Hutchins consists of various cloths and leather skins as well as articles of men’s and women’s clothing. The cloths include Oxford, various satinetts, Shepherd Plaid, Cotton Plush, Silk Plush, “Lionskin,” “Brown Super,” various tweeds, Scarlet Cloth, Kentucky Jane, Gingham, flannels, Fancy Prints, Checked Muslin, Oil cloth, Velvet, Serge, Green Baize, etc. Animals skins or leathers include kid, moleskin, and beaver. The firm also sold towels, ribbon, edging, galloons, black silk fringe, black and colored gimps, horse blankets and drugget and hemp for flooring.

Stowe, Allen & Hutchins sold clothing to men, women and children, e.g., pants, men’s drawers, cuffs, gloves, shirts, “sox” [socks], women’s hose, winter shawls, shoes, hats and caps, rubbers, slippers, terry robes.

The costs of the inventory are given in British Pounds Sterling. This suggests that Stowe, Allen & Hutchins dealt exclusively with imported textiles and a higher grade of manufactured goods.

A section recording retail transactions at their Philadelphia store at 1163 South 11th Street spans the years 1854 to 1881. This portion of the manuscript was kept irregularly. Entries from around 1880 suggest the firm may have also been dealing in candies and chocolate.

Interesting 19th-century Philadelphia business ledger and inventory book with a focus on the textile and clothing trade.
