A French Protestant New Testament from 1802

French Protestant New Testament edited by and published with the approval of La Compagnie des Pasteurs et des Professeurs de Genève (The Society of Pastors and Professors of Geneva). Organized in 1541, the society was a safeguard of Reform Protestant orthodoxy including approved translations of the Bible.

During the eighteenth century, the society made several attempts to improve the translation of the New Testament from the original Greek including a version published in 1726. The present New Testament appeared in 1802 and the complete revised Bible (Old and New Testaments) was published in 1805.

Interestingly for a religious work, the present book has the date 1802 as well as the French Revolutionary date, An X (Year 10), a reference to the innovative calendar begun in late 1793. The present copy has been signed by the publisher, G. J. Manget, on the verso of the title page just below the publisher’s legal anti-piracy and official library deposit notice.

Early manuscript presentation from Charles Roberts to S. Hilles of Wilmington, Delaware to title page. This is likely Samuel Hilles (1788–1873), Quaker, Wilmington educator, Haverford College general superintendent, amateur botanist, and abolitionist.
