[Final Issue:] Supplement ... Whalemen’s Shipping List and Merchants’ Transcript ... The Last Issue.
Rare and “The Last Issue” of the whalemen’s “Bible.” And after 71 years of publication.
With the decline of the Yankee fleet and the coming of World War I, New Bedford whaling took a hit and its leading whaling newspaper became unsustainable:
The Whalemen’s Shipping List “is to be hauled out on the beach, its activities at an end, yet we shall expect to hear, when the news comes in of some surviving whaler in trouble, sunk or disabled, ‘Where’s the last Shipping List?’ and to look up to see the ship news man, through force of habit, asking for his Bible that he may find the correct text.
Printed in 6 columns with a modest illustration. The annual report of the New Bedford whaling and whale fishery is included here for the last time.
